Teaching Philosophy

Philosophy
As an Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, my aim is to motivate children to achieve their fullest potential as a person. Special Education is a place where “one size fits all” does not exist. Each student learns differently and has their own unique characteristics. My classroom will be a safe environment for all students where each child can grow. There are three elements that I believe will establish such an environment, (1) having a positive attitude, (2) guiding children to accept themselves for who they are, as well as embracing the differences of others, and (3) having high expectations for all students.
It is somewhat cliché to say a smile is contagious. However, as a teacher enthusiasm is infectious to the classroom. For instance, before a student enters my classroom I want to implement some sort of verbal or nonverbal welcome. This not only creates a student-to-teacher relationship, but also gives the student a sense of safety in their learning environment. Not all students have perfect home lives. I want to be compassionate and understanding to all of my students. One of my biggest passions in life is helping others, and if my classroom can be a safe haven for students, then I have accomplished this.
One of my largest beliefs is every student has the right to receive appropriate educational services without labeling. I believe there are students that should be in a general education classroom, as well as students that learn more appropriately in a self-contained classroom. As a teacher, I want every child to see the best in themselves and others. I would use progressivism thinking and allow my students to apply what they are interested in within the classroom and use this to teach real-world problem solving. For the wide range of learning styles, I would alter my teaching to the child. I would exhaust all measures to find the proper way of learning for each student. The flexibility of my teaching whether it is lecture, technology, group work, or hands on allows all student to achieve, no matter their learning style.
I expect the best effort from each of my students. Holding them accountable is something they will appreciate in every aspect of life. I believe that all students have the ability to overcome their weaknesses by building new strengths and finding new ways that work best for them. Early Childhood Education is a demanding, yet fun field. It is always changing and is a great place for student and teachers to grow and learn along the way.
